Best Practice: Pest Inspection Annually

Love when things start warming up I am a little like the pests that we treat I like to stay warm and inside but now getting warmer I am more active.
Contact Bob 0407 065 413  http://www.a1pestcontrolcanberra.com.au
Coming into September the pests like European wasps which unlike bees can build their nest underground and undetected for ages and in the warmer months we have had clients that have unearthed the wasps and because unlike bees where they sting once the wasp will sting multiple times and have the rest of the swarm attack too if they come under threat.
Best practice is to do a pest inspection annually where we can look for signs of nests in our routine inspections. The last thing we as a family owned business wants is for your child or animals to find these nests.

A 6 EASY STEPS ON PEST CONTROL

There is no denying that pest control plays an important part in the health, wellbeing and protection of your family against disease spreading cockroaches, rodents and annoying ants, flies, wasps, moths and other creepy crawly pests!

Your first impulse might be to rush to the nearest store and buy a can of some sort of pest spray that you see on supermarket shelves but so many of those store-bought insect repellents contain ingredients that are can be harmful to family and pets as seldom either do not follow the instructions and use spray than is required or reapply the spray which can even be more dangerous. There are better ways to keep the pests outside without endangering your health of your family or pests.
  1. Keep your eyes peeled
Your best defence is prevention and that means keeping dishes in the dishwasher or washed up not leaving them out on the sink overnight. Wipe down bottles after use and  look for tell tale signs that show you that they are around.
  1. Even your landscaping can be problematic
Try keeping shrubs and branches well groomed away from your walls, so pests don’t make the natural transition from their home to yours. Anything that connects your property to the great outdoors can be a trouble spot. Windows, vents, pipes, chimneys, and roof tiles are just some of the spots pests will sneak through to gain entry. If you find open spaces near vents or pipes, use caulk to fill small cracks or steel wool for larger gaps.
  1. Stay dry
Water is doubly dangerous for encouraging pests. Wet areas serve as both breeding ground and drinking fountain. Places in wet areas such as bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry can be damp. If you find excessive moisture in these areas, consider fixing the problem immediately by calling a plumber or add further ventilation.
  1. Cleanliness is the key
Keeping your home clean is the best way to keep pests away, especially the kitchen where crumbs and other potential treats summon the hungry pest. And on days you don’t feel like tossing the trash, make sure your bins are covered or even sealed.
  1. Don’t make your house a bug buffet
How do you get rid of an unwanted human house guest? Make your home as inhospitable as possible when you put the snacks away, the party is over. Pests are no different they came to eat, so keep food in sealed containers or in the refrigerator. Fresh fruits might make a nice table centerpiece, but pests are attracted to your fruit.
  1. Know when your enemy has you beaten
You did all you could, but not every pest problem can be solved with a dash of chili powder. For instance, getting lots of itchy bites in bed? Bed bugs. Could be trouble.

Termites also call for the services of a professional licensed pest control expert as they can do extensive damage that is NOT covered by insurance. One of the many visual signs is If you find piles of discarded wings or piles of “frass” (a.k.a., termite droppings), these are sure signs you have a problem. The trouble with termites is that by the time you see termite evidence they have already done damage to fences, beams and window frames etc!
As the saying goes, “Prevention is always better than cure.”

EASTER PEST PEST CONTROL IN CANBERRA

http://a1pestcontrolcanberra.com.au/

As the weather cools and Easter is around the corner and the kids are due to be on holidays this is what we have found that generally happens in Canberra we get 2 types of pests predominately over this time which I will explain below.

RATS/MICE
Homeowners that live in close proximity to schools the rodents when the kids are on holidays and no longer throwing their food scraps on the ground the rodents venture to your home looking for a free feed and to also to shelter from the weather.
This will also be a pest in the newer suburbs as the grounds have been cleared to make way for housing and the rodents again look for somewhere to live and feed.
POSSUMS
Possums can be a problem all year round but this time of year they go and seek under the cloak of night a broken roof tile or entry to your home usually through your roof through unsealed air-conditioner unit to also shelter but they are looking for somewhere to nest in the coming months.
Another fact is that possums travel with their mate. There is never just one possum caught its always two.

General Pest Control

The first day of August which means spring next month. So over these last couple of months many of the troublesome insects and pests have been either sleeping, mating or both ready to make an appear when the warmer weather.
European Wasp is a nasty one as the are often mistake for bees but unlike bees who sting and die the European Was can sting many times, and tells others to do the same!
Last year we unearthed a nest underground the size of a soccer ball. But here is the thing do not disturb them or as stated that they will turn on you to protect the colony at all cost. Even through the protect clothing our team wear the wasp can penetrate our gear so never ever go to rid of these pests yourself.
NOW IS THE TIME TO…
– do a general pest control
– check garden beds to see what pests are lurking
– clean up and wipe down pantry cupboard and shelves
– get a termite inspection done – thermal image one is best
Just a few ideas for general maintenance leading into the warmer months that can save you from pests and also save you money.

Spring Is Here and So Are the Pests - Pest Control Canberra

Nothing like the start of spring that makes everything grow and the insects and pests start tobe noticed again.

TERMITES

Termites are the silent pests and you really are not aware that they are around until you see evidence or damage first hand. If you are out in the garden take a look at trees, fence lines or the tree you cut down and left the stump as that is what they love – soft wood. People are under the impression that insurance covers the damage these pests cause and 99% insurance policies DO NOT cover termite damage.

We offer a $2M 8 year assurance policy when we do our termite barriers so definitely worth getting us to inspect and or treat your property as we use only quality treatments.

EUROPEAN WASPS

We get a lot of call outs for these pest and if there is one thing I will say is DON’T disturb them at all we have protective clothing and they still manage to sting us. What happens is that when disturbed the whole nest attacks and unlike bees who sting once they sting multiple times.

If your in the garden be careful as European wasps nest can sometimes be underground. We had a nest that was the size of a basketball that we removed last season.

BEES

We know that bees are in the news at the moment and we always refer our calls to beekeepers to remove unwanted nests but there are times when bees can not be accessed and they become a risk to humans when they are inside walls and hard to get to places and we need to kill them so that they don’t sting humans and pets.

GENERAL PEST INSPECTION

Like spring cleaning now is a great time to treat your property with a general pest treatment. We get asked about spiders and we can treat those for you and will spray their webs, many people though get a broom after we go to take down the web not thinking the treatment will be active for many weeks to come to new spiders that visit the web. So leave the web up for 3-5 weeks for longer term treatment.

Pest Control Management – Cockroach Baiting

This is a pretty disgusting topic and not one to be read while having dinner but cockroach baiting is considered to play an important role in pest control cockroach management programs.
Cockroaches are one of the great survivors and that is why general treatment by home and property owners when using off the shelf products is ineffective when treating an infestation of cockroaches.
BAITING PROVIDES A DOUBLE ACTION EFFECT
Pest Control management uses a term such as toxicant transfer which is when the cockroaches that have fed upon an intoxicated bait contaminating their immediate environment with toxicant laden faeces and vomit which is then consumed by other cockroaches leading to their demise.
It gets better though through the secondary distribution of the bait is the one that is more important especially even more effective should I say with female and instar nymph (baby cockroaches) who do not venture far out from their harbourages.
WHY YOU NEED PROFESSIONAL PEST CONTROL
In the natural environment coprophagy or the consumption of cockroach faesces by nymphs this is called proctodaeal feeding which is directly from the anal area, in the natural environment this type of feeding is essential for their survival. A recent study found that 90% of newly hatched nymphs could survive 10 days eating faesces alone. It seems that the cockroach faesces and vomit contains pheromones that can serve to attract others.
Also there is no doubt that the pest control baits will kill cockroaches but we need  to not have the adult cockroaches killed too quickly as the active bait makes its way through their digestive system and gives the roach time to return from their foraging trips to their harbourages if the bait kills them before they return the transfer is not going to work.
As you can see that using off the shelf product will kill the adults but it will not stop the breeding cycle.
Although no one wants to encourage cockroaches but they are very interesting all the same. It seems the nymphs are attracted to the vomit and faesces of the female cockroach over the male of the species.
A1 Pest Control Canberra team will evaluate the correct product for the type of problem either for commercial or property owner is having.
One of the problems we see in both types of properties is the level of hygiene is not stringent enough and provides breeding grounds for the cockroaches. For example, we had a call out to a new home occupied by 2 Indian families and although the surfaces in the kitchen looked to be clean, on touching the surfaces they were greasy along with the floor.
The owner was asked what they used to wipe down with and they basically only swept the crumbs off.
Benches, floors, toasters, microwave and dishwashers need to be cleaned and wiped over with hot soapy water or a commercial prepare detergents suitable for the cleaning surface.
Pantry is another area that needs attention and opened bottles and packets need to be sealed or transferred to a sealed container.
As already mentioned once into food stuffs the cockroaches vomit and drop faesces in the food or on kitchen preparation areas – to humans this can make you ill or worst case scenario kill you.
On further investigation the bins were full and we asked the owner when do they empty them and were told every 4-5 days which is not often enough. Bins need to be emptied daily and wiped out if there is any residue in the bin.
Simple procedures that are done regularly will say you for a cockroach infestation and protect the health of your family and pets.

What I love about our pest control company in Canberra is that we are a family owned business that has customers that think enough of us that they write reviews to tell others of their pest control experience that they got from Bob and his team. One of the main things that stand us apart from our competitors is our customer service and how we spend the time to update and educate our customers.
We are an Australian company not sold out to overseas companies like some of our competitors that are playing on the fact that they use to be wholly Australian owned and now owned entirely by overseas companies – which is sad.
Services that we provide:
  • Termite Thermal imaging inspections – access or weather is never a problem
  • Termite barriers with $2million 8 year assurance policy
  • General pest treatment – both family and pet friendly
  • Possum removal
  • European Wasp removal
  • Dead rat removal – with odour bags that don’t mask the smell they absorb the odours

We are there when you need us to be this may mean that you need us to not to disturb your day to day work routine so we will work outside normal 9-5 work hours which is ideal for our e-commence clients.
Customer service is the name of the game and many of our competitors will give a 4-5 hour window of when they will be there. A1 Pest Control Canberra will be there at an appointment time. Also another thing is that all staff has had Police checks.
If we can be of assistance for any pest control needs please call Bob 0407 065 413 or contact us through our website contact form at http://A1PestControlCanberra.com.au

A1 Pest Control Canberra Thermal Imaging Is A Must Selling Your Home

This is a really important message to put out because one of the first things that a seller needs to do to prepare their home to go on the market is to organise both building and pest inspections as this is included in the contract that the solicitor puts together the report that must show that the property is clear of termites and asbestos.
The buyer then buys the report off the owner at exchange. Receipts are attached and this is only in ACT not any other states.
In effect the reports cost the seller NOTHING as the buyer reimburses the seller.
WHAT STOPS OR DELAYS A SALE
If the prospect is considering buying the property they are sometimes disappointed at seeing comments seen on a termite or building visual pest report:
– weather prevented entry to roof
– not able to access to inspect etc
The buyer is left wondering if there are termites and or building faults and are left to decide do I accept this report and gamble and pray its all fine or do I order another report?
There is only one way to ensure a property gets a thorough inspection and that is through having a thermal imaging inspection.
One of the best things that having this type of inspection it not only picks up termite movement, body heat and moisture before any damage and also weather and space restrictions do not effect thermal imaging inspection at ALL….
BUT WAIT THERE IS MORE….
Thermal imaging will pick up termite, movement, body heat & moisture long before there is any damage BUT also building faults such as:
– roof leaks, bathroom leaks
– a/c duct leaks
– potential plumbing issues
– moisture & mold
– missing insulation
– electrical concerns
Where the visual inspection can not detect many of the problems outlined above this could be the VERY reason an astute buyer would want you to knock many thousands off the price when you could get the thermal imaging done and fix any potential problem.
BUYER BEWARE
If the home you are purchasing does have a complete visual pest report on the most important buying decision you will make GET A THERMAL IMAGING REPORT TODAY
Many times we have been called by distressed buyers who have gambled with visual inspection reports that they have not been able to gain access to certain areas….and guess what? That is the very area that the problem was!

GET RID OF RATS or POSSUMS YOUR ROOF

Spring is the time that you may get possums in your roof they return to where the source is and use the space to shelter and raise their young.
While it may not cause too much trouble with just a few in the roof it may will cause you many sleepless nights when the whole family start fighting or mating.
Also with all of the building that is now happening in Canberra there are many times when builders seal the entry not knowing that there is a possum in the roof and its not too long that the possum die and the smell becomes unbearable.
We have had clients and this isn’t pleasant where maggots drop from the light fittings where the possum has died.
WHAT TO DO WHEN A POSSUM DIES IN YOUR ROOF
Only yesterday (Sunday) Bob took a call from a home owner where it was a slight smell then the smell got increasingly worse as the body of the possum decayed.
We can also get this happening when people throw baits in the roof when they think that it will kill the rodent and it does but they can not escape and die.
1) Ring Bob 0407 065 413
2) The team will remove the dead possum/rat
3) Put an odour bag up that will absorb the smell NOT mask it.
Problem solved!

Possum Catchers Hints and Tips

Those cute little big eyed possums are great in the wild but let them find their way to your roof void through broken tiles or not properly sealed cooling/heating units your peaceful nights will be no more!
In fact when you are getting ready to close your eyes the possums are ready to party and they do and scurry in your roof like they have army boots on, fight and mate that will keep you awake or disturb your sleep.
Bob and the team get called out regularly to trap/relocate possums and people think that they have only one possum but that is not true they travel in pairs with their mate and customers are very surprised when we do trap the 2nd possum.
HINTS AND TIPS
– never leave food out for possums as this encourages them to return
– rake up fallen fruit from fruit trees
– trim back bushes and shrubs from outside the house by a metre
– get rid of vines growing on the house as they are easy access to your roof
– check that installed air conditioning is properly sealed
– don’t leave pet food bowls with any food left in it outside
A1 Pest Control Canberra are one of only a few pest control companies that are fully licensed by TAMS to catch and release possums.
We can also hire the traps out for those that want to do this themselves (POA).
